If you’re wondering how to start juicing as a beginner then you are in the right place. There are some basics that you need to know to get you started. In this post, I will share 9 Juicing Tips for Beginners and try to explain its importance.

I’ve thought of blogging about juicing tips for beginners as I’ve been there too. I’ve done a few experiments as well. Some things are hard to figure out on your own. Knowing the basics will help you maximize your juicing experience.

Before we go into recipes and juicers (which I plan to blog as well), it is important to know what juicing is as a beginner. Juicing is extracting the nutrients from the produce which are usually depleted through cooking. Juicing is a healthy way to add nutrients to our diet. And the best part of it is – it’s fun and easy!

I suggest that you start first with your favorite fruits and vegetables. Then, consider other fruits and vegetables later on in your juicing journey. Sweet beet is now my favorite which I’ve never tried or tasted before!

9 Juicing Tips for Beginners

1. Use organic fruits and vegetables.

Organic has no pesticides and they are unsprayed produce. If unavailable or if it cost too much in your area, the next best thing to do is to peel the produce before juicing them. Help your local farmers by patronizing and buying produce that are from within your area.

2. Wash all the produce thoroughly.

And remove the molds, bruised or damaged parts of fruits and vegetables.

3. Stems and leaves of fruits and vegetables are OK to be juiced. 

Except those that contain toxins like carrot top and rhubarb leaves. Rhubarb leaves are considered poisonous as they contain Oxalic Acid or “ethane acid”. Avoid eating a whole leaf. A tiny piece won’t do any harm.

As for carrot tops, they contain alkaloids and nitrates. They aren’t as toxic unless consumed by the bushel.

4. Peel off the skins of oranges and grapefruits.

Its skin contains toxic substance and tastes bitter. The white cover part of orange contains bioflavonoids and vitamin C.

Other fruits that needs peeling are kiwi, papaya, pineapple, etc. These are heavily sprayed by pesticides. While lemons and limes do not necessarily need to be peeled. I preferred them peeled and remove the seeds. Lastly, waxed produced should be peeled.
 

5. Fruit pits must be removed before juicing (apple, peach, plum, etc.)

Apple seeds contain a small amount of cyanide and should not be juiced. While lemon, melon, lime, grape, etc. are OK to be juiced with the fruit.

6. Cut your fruits and vegetables to the size that your juicer can accommodate.

For celery, spinach, kale, etc. I cut them to a 2-inch minimum so the pulp won’t clog in the juicer.

7. If your goal is to use juicing as a meal replacement.

The enough amount for a day to consume would be at least 355 mL of green juice, 5 times a day. Be prepared to pee a lot of times in a day!

8. As much as you can, make your juice 90% vegetables.

Aside from leafy greens (spinach, parsley, celery, etc.), you can also always add broccoli, carrots, cucumber, beet, etc.

9. A decent great quality juicer is a lifesaver.

You get what you pay for! A centrifugal juicer, won’t extract a lot of juice from leafy vegetables. Masticating juicers or slow juicers are preferred by daily drinkers as they handle leafy vegetables well. Omega and Hurom are high-quality masticating brands. Slow juicers extract quality juice and more quantity than a centrifugal.

Lastly, it is ideal to drink your juice on an empty stomach in the morning. I used a Hurom juicer and the juices I make taste good until the third day. But it is best to drink it right after juicing them when it’s its freshest.

Also, always add lemon in your juice as it is a natural preservative which prolongs your juices’ shelf life.

Being committed to eating healthy food is very important. Find a schedule for juicing and stick to it until juicing becomes a habit. Also, stay away from highly processed or refined foods as much as possible.

Don’t be discouraged by simple tasks such as cutting and peeling fruits and vegetables. Or cleaning the juicer. These are part of the activity. It is rewarding once these tasks are done. Because the health benefits of wholesome, fresh juice are amazing!
